There are 36 days until the election, local news you need to know
VICTORIA, Texas — Currently, it’s a little over a month until election day and people are getting prepared. University of Houston, Victoria professor Craig Goodman posted a video on YouTube to inform his students how to register to vote before the deadline. He gave them directions on how to register in Victoria county and their home county.
Many younger voters often get scrutinized for bot being politically involved or aware, yet Goodman wanted to make sure this students were prepared this time around.
“Getting registered to vote, Texas has a deadline. It’s 30 days, before election day. So that means, if you want to vote in November, you have to be registered by 5, October, 2020. At 11:59 PM,” he said.
Since Texas does not have online voter’s registration as an option, Goodman joked with his students, saying they need to get “sticky things,” or stamps. In order to mail in their registration.
While he does mention students can go to the Voter’s County Elections office, he knows this is highly unlikely for them, which is why he presses the option of mailing in the paperwork.
Goodman continues and says, “In Texas, the problem is especially acute because we don’t allow for online voter registration. Texas is one of nine states, I believe that do not allow for online voter registration. I kind of make a joke with my students that if they want to get registered to vote, especially right now, they need one of those sticky things. Their called stamps, they don’t know what they are. They’ve never seen them probably.”
Some students shared his post on Facebook and even gave it likes.
The last day to register to vote for the 2020 election is October 5. Early voting runs through October 30. Depending on what precinct you live in, Victoria County voters will review these contested races.
County Commissioner Precinct #1 is between incumbent Danny Garcia and Kenneth Wells.
Constable, Precinct #1 is between Vicente Flores Jr. and Jeff Meyer.
County Tax Assessor-Collector is between Ashley Hernandez and Jane Bernal.
